Dibs on Denali’s Wild Side for a Great Biking Adventure in Alaska

To experience truly wild biking, you should check out Denali National Park in Alaska. There, you can enjoy a unique and exciting experience as a biker. However, before you venture up there, you should take a look at a few of these tips and ideas about biking in Denali Park.

The first thing to consider is how you will travel so that you do not lose your way. After all, Alaska and especially Denali are wild and dangerous places. The good news, though, is that in Denali it is difficult for a cyclist to get lost. There is but one road you have to travel on. It starts at the entrance to the park and goes about 100 miles west. The road ends at Wonder Lake. You can actually bicycle further if you like, but the going gets a little tougher beyone Wonder Lake.

At the visitors center in the park, you can pick up free maps. A map is a good idea if you are going to be biking out in the park. Even though there is only the one road, it is important to have an idea of where you are and where you are headed no matter what part of the road you may be on.

You should always be aware of traffic when you are doing any riding. At the park, this is no different. The first few miles of the road leading from the entrance to the park are paved and wide enough to make travel pretty easy. The only problem, though, is that this is also the part of the road where you will likely see the most traffic. Anyone with a vehicle can actually drive on this part of the road all the way up to Salvage River.

Once you get past Salvage River, you will find a dirt road. The dirt road is easy to navigate because it is nicely graded. Even on a touring bike, as opposed to a mountain bike, the dirt road is easy to travel.

After you get past Teklanika Viewpoint, it gets easier for bikers with regards to traffic. That is because that part of the road is limited access for park busses, bikers, and walking traffic only. If you are biking, there are so few busses that you will feel like the road is there just for you. It is important to note, though, that you are not allowed to ride your bike off of the road.

If you are considering a ride through the park, then you may want to think about changing the route to miss some of the traffic. Try starting at the visitor center. There, you can make arrangements to get a bus to take you into the park and you can then ride out. You will avoid a lot of traffic and give yourself a good chance at a great riding experience. Also, keep in mind the rules and biking etiquette. You may find parks crowded with people and you need to be aware that children may be in the area as well. Of course, safety for yourself and others will be paramount.

As you can see, there is a lot to enjoy about riding in Alaska. The weather, the nature, and the overall experience you can have in Denali is well worth the planning and effort it takes to get there. With that in mind, consider making your next trip on bike take place in the great north in Alaska.
